In the winter of 2026, the Village of Pleasantville and a consulting team began identifying key partners, collecting data, and analyzing roadway safety. Project milestones include:

  • Public Engagement: May – July 22, 2026

  • Safety Improvements: Summer 2026

  • Action Plan: Fall 2026

Pleasantville
Safe Streets

Pleasantville is creating a Safe Streets for All (SS4A) Comprehensive Safety Action Plan to plan for road safety and to improve mobility and quality of life for everyone who travels in our community.

An SS4A project is a federally funded initiative designed to help communities make a comprehensive Action Plan that guides future roadway safety improvements. The funding comes through the U.S. Department of Transportation and is specifically intended to support planning work, not construction.

This planning process provides a starting point for future projects that may involve multiple partnerships and helps streamline coordination so that when funding opportunities become available, the community is ready to act with a clear, unified strategy.

To prevent roadway fatalities and serious injuries, Pleasantville will use the Safe Systems Approach and help develop a holistic, well-defined strategy to mitigate roadway safety risks for all residents.

In the Safe System Approach, eliminating fatalities and severe injuries for all roadway users is the top priority. It is a way to make roads safer by building several layers of protection to prevent crashes and reduce serious injuries and deaths if they do happen. This method, widely used in the transportation field, treats safety as something shared by everyone involved—drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, road designers, transportation providers, and policymakers.

The approach not only aims to lower the number of crashes but also focuses on preventing the most severe ones. It recognizes that people make mistakes while driving, walking, or biking and works to prevent these mistakes from causing death and serious injury. By identifying and fixing gaps in the transportation network, either through changes in road design or policy updates, the Safe System Approach aims to create safer streets for all.

The Interactive Map remains open for public comments through July 22. Share your ideas and feedback before it closes!
